Ever since some mobile phone companies started offering local call charges for calls from within a 500 metre radius of your home, that landlines would become less common as a telephone line. (Landlines are usually used just to access the internet. And with wireless broadband available, even this is becoming rarer)
Follow up:
Well, for those of you who have families who don't like using mobiles, you can now get a landline replacement device by Phone Lab called Dock-N-Talk. The Dock-N-Talk allows you to dock your mobile into it and use it like you would a normal telephone.
When I first saw this my immediate reaction was "Why bother?" but then I realised that there are still many people out there who don't like mobile phones or don't want to fiddle with the tiny buttons (eg, grandparents or people who don't like complicated technology) and so I applaud the release of this device. You can find out more from Phone Labs here.
