SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol and it is the next industry standard to come about. The system will converge internet protocol multimedia communications.

So, quick explanations -

Follow up:

html allowed everyone the ability to view web pages and other features online. Before this there were a number of programs that interpreted data via dos and other languages. Html brought these things together.

SIP will bring together all multimedia communication devices. So, your voip phone, skype, icq, msn, email, video conferencing and other systems which are currently different programs, will converge and use the same similar interface. So, for example, you want to contact your friend John Smith. Fire up your SIP interface and you can see straight away that he's not online with Skype or ICQ but that his VOIP phone is active as is his Gmail chat and email. As these technologies are compatible with landlines you can call him on his mobile from your computer.

Sounds great and, for me, it would mean not having to check my three mobiles for sms or look at my 25 email accounts separately. It would also mean not having to run MSN, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and Gmail chat as separate programs, and it would also mean being able to connect my webcam to one program, rather than trying to make it work for each one individually. Roll on SIP.
